Thank you Professor Gregory Aldrete for
producing this informative historical course.
As a student of history, I have learnt a
lot from this course. Aspects of this course that I found interesting /
enjoyable / memorable include (not in any order):
- Operation Market Garden - 1944: Allied forces was "almost there" save for the last bridge!
- Tannenberg - 1914: Russia beaten by much smaller sized Germany.
- Isandlwana: 25,000 Zulus Undetected - 1879, due to poor positioning and reconnaissance.
- Crimea: Charge of the Light Brigade - 1854. Poor / unclear orders by the British! Somehow before going through these lectures I thought the "Charge of the Light Brigade" was an American story, but I was wrong (it was at Crimea (British vs Russian)).
- Napoleon Retreats in the Snow - 1812. I didn't know that Napoleon and his troops actually DID reach Moscow! But the Russians behaved differently from the French's expectations.
- Genghis Khan's general Subotai's victories at Kalka River - 1223. Excellent application of "divide and conquer" strategy, utilising the Mongolian troops' speed advantage.
- Fourth Crusade: Byzantium Betrayed - 1204. Destruction of Constantinople by the Crusaders, who was driven to do this primarily by the huge debts they incurred at Venice.
- And lastly, wonderful insights from Professor Aldrete in the final lecture (Lecture 24) summarising the 23 or 24 case studies presented in this course.
If you enjoy history and/or military
history and learning lessons from them, you will enjoy this course.
